Description: One day, a little girl named Ally was reading a book written by Lewis Carroll,
called "Through the Looking Glass." It was a warm day, and Ally's black
and white cat (Kitty) was keeping her company. This made it seem even warmer,
because Kitty has a habit of sleeping in the warm sunlight near the window, and
then jumping with a big "thump" on Ally's lap. (Kitty is a very fat
black and white cat, but she really likes to sit on Ally's lap and be cuddled.)
On this particular day, Ally was pretending to be Alice (from the book) and
so she scolded Kitty in the very same way that Alice scolded Dinah's kittens:
"Oh, you wicked, wicked little thing..." Now if anyone had been watching,
it may have seemed quite humorous to see a little girl like Ally calling Kitty
a "little" thing, but that is what she said.
"Really, your mother should have taught you better manners," Ally
said, after Kitty jumped on her lap, and she gave Kitty a kiss, just to make
the fat cat understand that she was in disgrace. Kitty, not being the gentlest
or most sensitive of creatures, simply kept digging her claws into Ally's lap,
kneading away as if her life depended upon it.
Eventually, Kitty settled down, and the warmth from her body and the loud purr
that was almost like a "snore" (as I said Kitty was not the gentlest
of creatures) began to work its magic on Ally. Although she was really quite
involved with the "Through the Looking Glass" story, she found herself
getting sleepier and sleepier.
Ally was only vaguely aware when something through the window caught Kitty's
eye, and she hardly even realized it when Kitty jumped to the floor (with a
resounding "thud" of course!) After that Kitty quickly jumped (again
with a "thump") onto the table by the bay window, and resumed her
favorite pastime watching the world outside.
Like all cats, Kitty is a curious creature, and things were about to become
"curiouser and curiouser." For as Ally very nearly dozed off, Kitty
put her fat black and white paws up to the window, and a very strange thing
happened: the window pane got very soft like gauze and Kitty fell right through
it!
Ally shook herself awake, rubbing her eyes because she could scarcely believe
what had happened. She scrambled up onto the table, and saw a beautiful world
through the window: a world that had simply not been there before! It was very
odd, because, through the other window and in the living room of Ally's house,
everything looked just the same as before. But Ally knew she had to find Kitty.
Kitty had never caught a mouse in her entire life: who would take care of her?
Ally bravely slipped through the window, and into a new world that was nothing
like the one she knew before!
